Doug
Born and raised on St. Simons Island, Georgia, Douglas Klinowski began his working career at the age of 15 in a small family owned Italian restaurant. It did not take long for Douglas’s talent for understanding and connecting with people to emerge. Even at a young age, Douglas established a track record of building and leading successful teams. He attended the University of Alabama where he played four years of rugby. During this time, he also competed and placed in the Alabama State Bodybuilding Championship. Douglas graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Management from the University of Alabama, School of Business. From there, he moved into management with an international health club chain based in Colorado. He quickly demonstrated not only that he is a successful leader, but that he has a real passion for marketing, sales and hospitality.
After 6 years of turning under-performing health clubs into profitable ones, Douglas was recruited by his father to turn around a struggling portfolio of large assisted living communities in the central part of Florida. This challenge, presented in 2005, intrigued Douglas enough to cause him to relocate to Florida and become a licensed Assisted Living Administrator with an Extended Congregate Care Certificate. He spent the next 9 years turning this troubled portfolio of large, poorly managed assets with damaged reputations into facilities that today are pillars of the communities they serve. Douglas has been able to increase the total revenues by more than 20% while improving the overall profitability by more than 40%.
In an effort to expand the management portion of his business and to help other owner/operators repair their assets and bring them back to greatness, Douglast expanded his business to include innovative services such as due diligence, consulting and contract management. Doug’s team has completed projects from Pensacola to South Florida and Fort Myers to Orlando and Tampa. Today, he is focused on strategic growth by investigating and entering into new building projects, as well as guiding first time senior care investors to help them reach their goals of growing healthy, worry-free senior care portfolios.
As an industry leader, Douglas has spent many years on the Florida Assisted Living Association Board of Directors where he continues to serve on the Executive Committee as the Association’s Vice President. He is the 2014 recipient of the Sid Rosenblatt Excellence in Leadership Award, the most coveted accolade in the Florida Assisted Living Industry.
Douglas has enjoyed donating time to several organizations that raise money in support of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Through this experience, he realized that proportionally little money was provided to research institutions in search of a cure. His belief is simple: without proper funding for research; there may not be an end to this growing epidemic. Armed with this knowledge, he created the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, a not-for-profit charity dedicated to providing researchers with the funding necessary to work aggressively towards a cure for this debilitating disease. He is responsible for the complete oversight of the charity’s daily operations and provides the team with the tools and vision necessary to help the foundation realize its ambitious goals.
While golf is a hobby, cycling is a passion with Douglas; he enjoys giving back to the community by supporting various charities in cycling events held throughout Florida. In 2012 Douglas met his soul mate, Laura Paige Slack, M.D., a physician specializing in Geriatric Medicine who shares his passion for caring for the elderly. Douglas and Paige married in June 2013 in a castle in Lake Garda, Italy; one of the couple’s favorite vacation spots.
